10 Years of SAMO!{Aug 27 2012}As of September 10th 2012, we'll have been doing this for exactly 10 years! To celebrate, we're having a party on September 1st (http://www.facebook.com/events/463795423643074/) where all friends and supporters of SAMO are welcome. Nothing formal or anything, just good music and booze (BYOB) from 9 or 10PM on.
Now that SAMO is a tween, allow me to get misty eyed and nostalgic for just a brief minute. I'm going to do this by way of thanking a few critical people for helping out along the way.
Jon Rishi Gerald was the founder and original owner of SAMO before I took over in 2005. I had worked for Jon at his previous company Design Infinity which focused on art design and CD manufacturing, in the east end of Toronto. When DI ended, him and I decided to work together and try again, this time bringing vinyl more into the fold. I was 22 with no knowledge or education on how to set up a business or keep it going - it was Jon that got it all up and running.
Jon and I set up shop in the corner of a friend's web design loft - Takeover Studio (http://takeoverstudio.com/), made up of Scott Willemsen, Matt Rennick, Anthony Bennett and James Hamilton. Some of those folks had run a record label called Redefine who had done some CDs with DI, and we became friends. Upon hearing that Jon and I had a new company with zero money in our bank account, they were incredibly gracious enough to offer a corner of their studio rent-free until we could get our feet off the ground. If it wasn't for them, we would never have been able to get our bearings, I'm convinced.
After a few years we moved out on our own and I took over the company when Jon retired. Since then, we've built up a great team of folks: Adam Cook, Tabi Irani, Kris Wood, Gordon Dufresne, Andy Davison and everyone in our roving packaging team, including ex-regulars Jason Cousineau and Matt Turenne.
Thanks to Jon, everyone who has been part of our team, all the Takeover people I mentioned above, and anyone who's made a record or CD with us since 2002. Come party with us on the 1st.
Paul Miller & SAMO.
